Mittens are warmer than gloves — but there’s a trade-off. In mittens, your fingers get to huddle together for warmth, but you sacrifice dexterity. This is fine if you’re shoveling snow or unloading a truck, but things get tricky when you need to use power tools or perform other tasks requiring greater dexterity. With the proper insulation and fit, the best winter work gloves for the job will keep your hands toasty without the limitations of mittens

Based on your age, gender, and job type, there are a few variables to consider. People in their 20s generate more heat than people in their 30s and up. In general, men generate more heat than women. The activity level of work also determines when you’ll start to sweat.

Considering those factors,  you can find the best winter glove insulation by comparing the options below.

Warm: Foam Fleece: Fleece is a cozy, fuzzy cloth that dries rapidly and is excellent at retaining heat. Many people like foam fleece as a comfortable substitute for pure wool. Wool and synthetic fibers are combined to create a fleece with microscopic air pockets to trap heat.

Warmer: 3M Thinsulate™ (50-70 Grams): If you want dexterity and warmth, the ideal is 3M™ Thinsulate™. 3M’s creation can hold in more heat while taking up less space by using a 15-micrometer (really, really thin) fiber with a higher density than polyester, cotton, or fleece. 50-70 strikes a good balance between offering warmth and not adding bulk.

Warmest: 3M Thinsulate™ (80-400 Grams): Built into the lining of the best winter work gloves, synthetic or leather, is a full, water-resistant, dense lining of 3M Thinsulate™. When temperatures reach below-freezing, there’s no better way to keep the heat focused on the task at hand.

Gloves for extreme cold

What heavy-duty winter work gloves can hold up to temperatures below 15℉? More importantly, what gloves can hold up without limiting mobility and agility? Our top picks feature 150g Thinsulate™ lining, waterproof properties, and extended cuffs to layer into jackets for added coverage. The main difference is personal preference: synthetic or cowhide.

BEST LEATHER WINTER GLOVES

GLOVES FOR SNOWY CONDITIONS

When the weather pulls out all the stops, choosing the right work glove is more crucial than ever. In snowy, below-freezing temperatures, you need water-resistant materials, a good seal around your wrist, and heavy-duty insulation to protect your hands.

Gloves for fall and early winter (also early spring)

When you wake up, you see a bit of frost in the morning, and the forecast is a couple dozen degrees from beach weather. No gloves at all is not an option. So the best work gloves for those last (or first!) bits of yard work are on the lighter end and will help avoid cold or blistered hands while chopping wood.

The best work gloves for fall or early winter can be hard to pick. You can use this guide to find the right pair based on average temperatures in three states with brisk, cold, and harsh climates.

Brisk Temperatures

When you need protection more than you need warmth (but still need to hold in some heat), there’s the Model: 526N. With fingers and palms coated in premium textured latex, you get supreme grip, making them great gloves for chopping wood.  A brushed winter knit shell keeps you comfortable until the job’s done.

Colder Temperatures

In the just-above-freezing range, we recommend Model: 7878/7809. These gloves combine the flexibility of water-resistant spandex with the hardiness of synthetic leather, all while offering a warm lining. The adjustable wrist can be tightened to ensure the best protection from snow and cold air.

Even Colder Temperatures

If the climate is getting even colder, check out Model: 7794. It’s a beefier version of the 7878 with a 70-gram 3M Thinsulate® lining instead of fleece insulation. When things get a bit icy, you get the same abrasion resistance and strength of synthetic leather with water-resistant spandex and PVC palm patching for extra grip, making them great gloves for shoveling snow.

What do your best winter work gloves look like?

There isn’t one perfect glove for every job, just like there’s not one glove that fits every hand size. For any job, in any environment, people continue to trust Wells LamontⓇ decade after decade because of the quality, consistency, and integrity we offer our customers. Spring is gone, Summer is in full gear! But, before getting started, it’s important to gear up with the right pair of gardening gloves. There are many types of gloves for different jobs around the yard. Use our helpful gardening glove guide to find the right glove for your specific outdoor task.

The primary factor in choosing the right glove is the material(s) used.

Some important qualities when choosing gardening gloves can include puncture protection (from tools or sharp thorns), water resistance, and overall fit (loose vs. tight). The determining factor for these glove qualities is the material used to construct the glove.

To help guide you in choosing your next pair of gardening gloves, we’ve broken down the most common types of materials used by Wells Lamont and the unique qualities they can bring to your gardening and outdoor activities.

FULL LEATHER, WATER-RESISTANT

For all the spring showers thrown your way, Wells Lamont has water-resistant full leather gloves to provide a hardy working material that can stand up to the elements. Our HydraHyde technology makes it all possible, allowing you to get your gardening done while not worrying about your hands feeling damp or stuffy. Like our traditional leather gloves, these gloves include an elastic wrist that keeps dirt and debris out. For your toughest gardening projects — rely on the full leather, water-resistant gloves.

LEATHER HYBRID, WATER-RESISTANT

Long day of multi-tasking? No problem! Combining the flexibility and comfort of spandex material and the hardiness of leather, water-resistant hybrid leather gloves keep your hands dry and protected during long days outside. Whether you’re tackling work in the garden or getting things done on the ranch, these gloves will fit comfortably while allowing your hands to breathe.

FULL LEATHER

Full leather gloves are perfect options for people picking out gardening gloves based on durability and versatility. The durable leather offers excellent abrasion resistance and puncture protection from thorny plants and the elastic wrist will keep out dirt and debris. These gloves provide excellent durability and grip, so if you’re tackling other outdoor tasks besides gardening, full leather gloves are a solid, hardy option to work with.

LEATHER HYBRID

Hybrid leather gloves combine durable materials that create a flexible and durable glove for gardening. Wells Lamont’s hybrid leather gloves are the best choice for the gardener who needs something that’s abrasive-resistant while still offering plenty of breathing room with stretchy spandex material. Reinforced leather fingertips and padded knuckles protect your hands from sharp objects while you’re in the garden.

SYNTHETIC LEATHER

When picking out a garden glove, it’s important to find an option that can dry quickly and is machine washable. The synthetic leather glove features quick-drying, lightweight materials at economic prices and is one of the best gloves for hot weather. These gloves are perfect for those doing intricate gardening, where precision and dexterity are key. But don’t worry — these synthetic leather gloves still provide plenty of durability, making sure your hands are kept protected from sharp objects and scratches.

LEATHER PALM

A true classic for tough work days, the leather palm glove is designed to be both resilient and protective. Perfect for tasks like raking up grass cuttings or leaves, these gloves feature an elastic wrist for keeping debris out and a winged thumb for extra flexibility. The safety cuff provides protection to the wrist and features an open cuff that allows ventilation and quick removal.

COATED GRIP

Coated grip gloves are designed to provide a strong grip while the polyester outer layer offers excellent dexterity while you’re handling plants and tools around the garden. They are also one of the best gloves for hot weather gardening.

BREATHABLE

For all the spring showers thrown your way, Wells Lamont has water-resistant full leather gloves to provide a hardy working material that can stand up to the elements. Our HydraHyde technology makes it all possible, allowing you to get your gardening done while not worrying about your hands feeling damp or stuffy. Like our non-water-resistant leather gloves, these gloves include an elastic wrist that keeps dirt and debris out. For your toughest gardening projects — rely on the full leather, water-resistant gloves.

You may be tempted to pick up a pair of discount women’s gardening gloves at the garden center checkout, but think twice before you do. The cost may be low, but the right pair of gloves can save your hands, last twice as long, and make working in the garden easier and more efficient.

What are the best ladies’ gardening gloves?

That depends. Not all gloves are right for every task. The best women’s gardening gloves are the ones that are purpose-built for the work you plan to do. See our guide to find out what features of women’s gardening gloves are best suited to your landscape plans.

BEST LADIES’ ALL-SEASON / ALL PURPOSE GARDENING GLOVES

If you’re in the garden from the beginning of planting season through fall clean-up, or you dabble in many types of gardening, versatility is the name of the game. When you need a good, all-season, all-purpose, go-to women’s gardening glove, look for the right balance of protective and flexible fabrics, such as leather palms with a breathable fabric on the back. Make sure your gloves have a snug wrist to keep dirt and debris off your hands. And of course, durability is a must to last through many days in the garden.

MOST DURABLE GARDENING GLOVES

If your garden is really a farm, or you tackle the toughest landscape projects, you need a women’s gardening glove with durability.  When it comes to durability, pick a glove with leather, (split or grain), to provide protection and extended wear. Look for reinforced leather patches on high-touch areas like the palm, knuckles, and fingertips to provide added wear resistance. Choose from materials that protect your hands and lengthen the life of your gloves.

BEST FLOWER GARDENING GLOVES

The best women’s gardening gloves for tending flowers depend, in some part, on what types of flowers you grow. Delicate blooms and annuals that require dead-heading require dexterity, while rose gardeners need protection from thorny stems.

BEST GLOVES FOR VEGETABLE GARDENING

Whether you are tending container gardens in the backyard or acres of vegetables on the farm, the best women’s gardening gloves for the vegetable garden need to keep mud and debris out while weeding, harvesting and tending to plants. Vegetables love sun and warmth, so breathability is a must and water resistance an added bonus.

MOST COMFORTABLE GARDENING GLOVES

Comfort is key when you don your women’s gardening gloves daily or spend hours amongst the plants and seedlings. Flexible and supple materials, like Wells Lamont’s ComfortHyde leather provide dexterity with enhanced durability.

BEST WATER-RESISTANT GLOVES

Water-resistance is different from waterproof in that a water-resistant material actually repels water–you will see it bead up on the surface of the glove rather than soak in. A waterproof material, like rubber, can provide total protection against moisture, but is usually less breathable and has less dexterity. When it comes to the best women’s gardening gloves, water resistance provides the perfect combination of versatility, breathability and long-lasting durability.

BEST ROSE PRUNING GLOVES

Rose gardeners have unique needs. The best women’s gardening gloves for rose tending need proper wrist and/or forearm protection from thorns combined with the flexibility to prune with ease.

Want to gear up without guilting Mother Earth? You’re not alone!

With eco-consciousness on the rise, people are looking for sustainable options – both in everyday life and in the products they consume, including gloves. At Wells Lamont, we’re staying true to our history of innovation by developing gloves with recycled materials to prove we all can make choices that are both sustainable and functional.

Sustainable Glove Materials

Many common glove materials like synthetics, leather, and processed fabrics take a major toll on the planet through their production processes. By innovating with eco-friendly fabrics and renewable materials, the aim is to reduce the environmental impact without sacrificing durability or quality.

So, which gloves are eco-friendly at Wells Lamont, and what sort of sustainable materials are in the pipeline?

Recycled Fabrics

Wells Lamont has started using recycled fabrics in select gloves, including Model 806/812 and Model 810K/813K. In doing so, consumer waste is redirected from going into landfills and oceans, to being recycled into new backing material.

Special 3M Thinsulate® Insulation

Many gloves from Wells Lamont feature 3M Thinsulate® insulation, helping to keep hands warm without adding bulk or sacrificing dexterity. This technology is now available in special variants, made from post-consumer recycled material. Wells Lamont proudly uses this Thinsulate® variant in a number of gloves.

rPET Technology

rPET, or Recycled Polyethylene Terephthalate, is made from repurposed polyethylene terephthalate — one of the most common plastics used make packaging and textiles. Since this material is infinitely recyclable, it can be made into new products to help manufacturers become more sustainable.

With this technology, it may be possible to create high-quality synthetic leathers. Wells Lamont is currently investigating this potential, as it could be a breakthrough in the production of sustainable gloves.

Other Renewable Leathers

Wells Lamont is exploring different leather alternatives, as well. Synthetic leathers made from renewable, vegan materials may also be a viable solution. Currently, there is some momentum around apple and cactus leathers, which could also serve as a useful alternative to traditional leather products.

Are work Gloves Recyclable?

What about gloves that are currently on the market — are they recyclable? Recyclable gloves are being produced, but most of them are single-use, disposable gloves. Most reusable gloves — especially heavy work gloves — aren’t made to be recycled, but possibilities are on the horizon.  Consumers are already seeing more fashion-focused recycled leather products in the market.

The future looks bright for recycling more glove materials as technology improves. For now, the focus is on gloves made of recycled and renewable materials in the first place. Eliminating waste from the start – that’s true sustainability!

What Type of Gloves Can Be Recycled?

Most recycling programs accept all three types of disposable gloves: latex, vinyl, and nitrile gloves. If these gloves are contaminated by chemicals or bacteria, however, they must be thrown away, not recycled. To learn more about the rules of recycling disposable gloves in your area, reach out to your local recycling center.

At this point, you may be wondering about biodegradation. While latex gloves are naturally biodegradable, vinyl and nitrile gloves are not. This makes it even more important to recycle uncontaminated vinyl and nitrile gloves.

When it comes to leather gloves, you can’t just throw them in your recycle bin. However, there is a process for recycling leather. Used or unwanted leather scraps are collected, mixed with natural rubber and shredded into a mixture. This mixture is then colored and pressed into a new sheet of recycled leather, which can be turned into products such as bags, shoes, recycled gloves, and more.

As recycled leather continues to gain momentum, there may be more extensive leather recycling programs in the future.

Explore Sustainable Gloves from Wells Lamont

At Wells Lamont, we’re always looking for ways to create sustainable products without sacrificing quality. As recycled fabrics and renewable leathers continue to evolve, we’re committed to using materials that are gentle on the planet but tough on the job.
Explore our gloves made with recycled fabrics, Model 806/812 and Model 810K/813K. Together, we can keep our hands happy and our planet humming!

In recent years, touchscreens have taken over — replacing the buttons on phones, control panels and even cars. While touch screens present several benefits to users, such as simple and updateable interfaces, they also make it difficult to perform commands while wearing gloves. This presents a real logistical challenge, impeding the ability of gloved workers — and people in general — to work devices smoothly and efficiently.

The solution? A good pair of touchscreen work gloves or winter gloves with touchscreen technology. These are often referred to as digital touch or smartphone gloves, as they make it possible to control touchscreen devices without having to expose your bare hands. But how do digital touch gloves work? And how do you choose the best pair for you?

To answer these questions, let’s first explore two common types of touchscreens and how they function.

Types of Touchscreen Technology

Resistive Touchscreens

Resistive touchscreens work by sensing pressure points that are applied to the screen. They feature two thin layers of transparent material positioned closely to one another without touching. Wherever the screen is pressed, the outermost layer gives way and makes contact with the inner layer. This contact allows for voltage to pass through that particular spot, signaling that a touch has been made.

Due to several disadvantages, such as the inability to support more complicated touches and gestures, resistive touchscreens aren’t found in modern smartphones, tablets, or laptops. But, because these touchscreens rely solely on pressure to detect commands, they’re often used in industrial applications where workers are outfitted with gloves.

Capacitive Touchscreens

If you’ve ever asked yourself, “Why can’t I use my phone with gloves on?” you were using a capacitive touchscreen. In fact, all iPhones and Android devices —  and essentially all tablets, smartwatches, touchscreen computers and other smart devices — have been made with capacitive touchscreens for years.

While they function beautifully, capacitive touchscreens have one downfall: because of how they work, they often can’t be used while wearing gloves.

Instead of relying on finger pressure, capacitive touchscreens rely on capacitance, or the ability of a body or object to store an electrical charge. These screens are infused with highly conductive materials that, when touched by human skin, draw a small electrical charge to the point of contact. This causes a disruption of the magnetic field, which pinpoints the exact location of the touch.

Most gloves block this transfer of energy, partially or completely compromising touchscreen operation. Only specialized smartphone gloves are made to accommodate touchscreens.

What Material Works for Touchscreen Gloves

When it comes to resistive touchscreens, any well-fitting glove will do. Regarding capacitive touchscreens, only digital touch gloves are guaranteed to work — and some function better than others. So how do these gloves work, and what materials should you look for?

Basically, the idea behind touchscreen gloves is simple: make the touchpoint out of conductive material to promote the transfer of electricity. This allows for energy to flow between your skin and the touchscreen, just as it would if you had bare hands.

While there are many smartphone gloves on the market, not all of them are created equal. It’s not just about having the right conductivity, it’s also about having the right fit and flexibility — with dexterous, well-formed fingertips. Wells Lamont’s FX3™ touchscreen gloves are a great solution, offering not only the digital touch you need to connect with your phone, but the dexterity you need to use it effectively.

Browse Wells Lamont’s Selection of Smartphone Touchscreen Gloves

Capacitive touchscreens have been a great innovation in modern electronics, and their enjoyment shouldn’t be impeded by the wrong type pair of gloves. If you’re in need of smartphone gloves, consider the FX3™ series from Wells Lamont — designed with a precurved fit for a natural feel.
